What M-CHAT is
M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) is a checklist completed by parents of young children. The version most used today, M-CHAT-R/F, is designed for children aged 16 to 30 months. It has 20 questions about behavior parents notice at home, such as pointing to show something, responding to their name and interest in other children.
Screening, not diagnosis
Parents should understand this before they see the result. Screening estimates the level of risk. Diagnosis needs a specialist and a comprehensive assessment. A high result does not mean the child is autistic, and a low result does not rule out follow-up if the parents are still worried.
Reading the result
M-CHAT-R results are usually grouped into three levels: low, medium and high. At medium risk, the Follow-Up interview clarifies the answers before any decision. At high risk, the child is referred for a diagnostic evaluation and early intervention without waiting.
What the center does after screening
- Explains the result to parents in plain language and writes down the next step.
- Books the appropriate deeper assessment when the result calls for it.
- Keeps the screening result in the child's record, because everything after starts from it.
How this works in Enable 360
M-CHAT is one of the tools live in the system, with automatic scoring. The result is saved in the child's record with their other assessments, and the consultant can select the next assessments the child needs so they are booked with a therapist.
Licensing assessment tools is the center's responsibility.
